Trip to Germany

Hey all, a friend and I would like to plan a trip to Germany at the beginning of summer. I would like to focus my time in a specific region, such as Southern Germany or Northern Germany. I have never traveled before on a scale like this and have no idea what to expect. Would anybody be able to give us some good advice, and/or provide us with numbers of what we are to expect cost-wise and maybe provide us with some sort of itinerary? Any help would be much appreciated!
