Portugal Trip Help Needed?

Hi,  I have been planning a trip to Portugal and have stumbled upon if I should go with a tour group or go by myself. I am from the U.S. and I speak a little European Portuguese and know a good amount about the cities and the culture. Many of the people I have talked to have said that when visiting the Alfama or Nazaré, or any other cities, it is necessary to go by yourself to experience the “real” Portugal. Is this true or should I go with an experienced tour guide???
